Which sizes to put in an ICO file
| Use | Sizes |
|---|---|
| Website favicon | 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 |
| Windows app or shortcut icon | 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 |
| Single large icon | 256×256 |
An ICO file can hold several images. Windows and browsers pick the size that fits best, so including more sizes looks sharper everywhere.
Questions
What is an ICO file?
ICO is the Windows icon format. One .ico file stores several square images of different sizes. It is also the classic format for favicon.ico. Read more in favicon file formats: ICO, PNG and SVG.
Does it keep a transparent background?
Yes. The images inside are stored as 32-bit PNG, so transparency is kept exactly. Tick Transparent under Background (it is on by default).
Can I convert JPG to ICO?
Yes. JPG has no transparency, so the icon keeps the JPG’s background. To remove it, save your logo as a transparent PNG first.
What is the largest size?
256×256, the largest size the ICO format supports.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The ICO file is built in your browser.
