How to convert SVG to a favicon

  1. Choose your SVG logo.
  2. Add padding, corners or a background if you want (these apply to the PNG and ICO files).
  3. Download the zip. It contains favicon.svg (your original), favicon.ico and every PNG size.
  4. Upload the files to your site’s root folder and paste the HTML, which already includes the SVG line.

Why use an SVG favicon

  • Always sharp. An SVG favicon scales to any size and screen.
  • Tiny file. A simple logo is often under 1 KB.
  • Dark mode. An SVG favicon can contain a prefers-color-scheme media query, so it changes colour when the browser uses a dark theme.

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and current versions of Safari use SVG favicons. Older browsers and some tools still look for favicon.ico, which is why the download includes both.

Questions

Do I still need favicon.ico with an SVG favicon?

Yes. Keep favicon.ico as a fallback. The HTML code lists the SVG first so modern browsers use it.

My SVG shows up blank.

SVGs that load external fonts or images can’t be drawn. Convert text to outlines in your design tool and embed any images, then try again.

Does Google Search accept SVG favicons?

Yes. Google accepts SVG favicons of any size.
