How to add a favicon in WordPress (Site Icon)

WordPress calls the favicon the Site Icon. You don’t need a plugin or any code: WordPress creates the favicon, Apple touch icon and Android icons from one image.

The image to use

Upload a square PNG of at least 512×512 pixels. Make one from your logo with the favicon generator (use android-chrome-512x512.png) or from a letter with the text favicon generator.

Classic themes

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize.
  2. Open Site Identity.
  3. Under Site Icon, click Select site icon, upload your image and crop if asked.
  4. Click Publish.

Block themes (Site Editor)

Block themes such as Twenty Twenty-Four don’t have the Customizer menu. Depending on your WordPress version:

  • look for a Site Icon setting under Settings → General, or
  • open the Site Editor, select the Site Logo block and turn on Use as site icon.

WordPress favicon not showing?

  • Your theme or an SEO plugin may add its own icon. Remove any hand-added favicon code from header.php and use only the Site Icon setting.
  • Clear your caching plugin and any CDN cache.
  • Check in a private browser window.
  • Run the favicon checker to see which icon your site really serves.
